A fourth-quarter rally wasn’t enough to propel the Mississippi All-Stars past Alabama in the 26th annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic played Saturday afternoon in Montgomery, Ala.
Alabama jumped out to a 9-0 lead at the half and led 21-0 before Mississippi’s rally started.
Oxford had two players — quarterback Parker Adamson and defensive end Xavier Pegues — play in the contest alongside Lafayette defensive back Brandon Mack. Adamson got Mississippi on the scoreboard first when he hooked up with Charleston’s Kameron Myers for a 47-yard touchdown pass.
Mississippi then inched closer when Ole Miss commit and Eupora wide receiver Derrick Jones, hauled in a 41-yard touchdown pass from Ocean Springs’ Wes Windham with 4:41 left in the contest. Mississippi got the ball back with a little over two and a half minutes left on the clock but was unable to gain a first down.
Adamson led Mississippi’s offense by going 12-for-21 for 117 yards. He had two interceptions in the contest, including one that was picked off in the end zone in the first half.
Mississippi totaled 241 yards compared to 318 for Alabama. Adamson was second on the team with 10 yards on the ground. Itawamba’s Ashton Shumpert led the team on the ground but he was limited to just 14 yards on 12 carries.
Myers led Mississippi with five catches for 82 yards, while Jones had four catches for 55 yards. Pegues was credited with three tackles, including one for a loss. Houston defensive end Chris Jones, who is committed to play for Mississippi State, was named MVP for the team after garnering eight tackles, with three going for a loss, and a sack. South Panola safety Antonio Conner, rated the top prospect in the state for the 2013 signing class, finished with seven tackles, two going for a loss, and one pass breakup.
Alabama’s victory was their fifth straight in a series it leads 19-7. (December 17, 2012, Page 1B)
